Catface Me
We recently had the pleasure of working with Catface.me, a blog and online store we are working with to increase their search engine rankings. The client had a great-looking website, a good social media following, and a lot of different products at a lot of different price points — but SEO was something they had never done fully before.
Plenty of their search phrases were showing up in the top 100 results. Hardly any were showing past page three or four, so the site wasn’t getting anywhere near the traffic it should have been.
What we looked at
Before we started we analysed the website and presented a suitable SEO strategy — one built around identifying and lifting the rankings of every product the client offers.
We looked into the site’s structure and how the categories could be organised better. We compared the phrases customers were actually searching for against the phrases the website was ranking for, and worked out how to categorise everything so that a customer searching for a particular product lands on the right page.
The aim wasn’t only more visitors to the store, but more of those visitors converting. The client had been extremely active with their blog, so we looked at linking particular posts through to the relevant product pages.
The problem we ran into
Partway through, we hit the biggest obstacle on the project: the website’s URL structure had completely changed. The client had moved shopping carts from WooCommerce to Shopify, and the URLs indexed in Google still pointed at the old shop.
Customers clicking those results were being taken to pages that no longer existed. So we went back through every existing product and matched each one to its page, meaning a click on a search result now lands on the correct product.
Results
The client has seen an increase in both sales and traffic.
We also fully optimised the Google Webmaster account by creating a sitemap — a map of every single page on the website — and submitted it to Google, so that Google knows when the site is updated and refreshes the relevant products in its results as they go live.
We are also setting up an IFTTT system for the social networks, integrated with Twitter, so that every new product release can be syndicated to multiple blogs and platforms at once.
